Scientific Facts in the Bible

1. The Earth Rests on Nothing

He spreads out the northern skies over empty space; he suspends the earth over nothing.

Job 26:7 (1500 BC)

Nicolaus Copernicus discovered the earth hangs on nothing in 1543 AD.

3. Countless Stars

I will make the descendants of David my servant and the Levites who minister before me as countless as the stars in the sky and as measureless as the sand on the seashore.

Jeremiah 33:22 (500 BC)

We can only observe a few thousand stars with our eyes, but there are so many stars in the universe that they cannot be counted.

5. The Second Law of Thermodynamics

In the beginning you laid the foundations of the earth, and the heavens are the work of your hands. They will perish, but you remain; they will all wear out like a garment. Like clothing you will change them and they will be discarded.
Psalm 102:25-26

The Second Law of Thermodynamics says that in all physical processes, every organized system tends to become more disorganized over time. Everything is wearing out and running down as energy becomes less available for use.

7. Oceanography

the birds in the sky, and the fish in the sea, all that swim the paths of the seas.
Psalm 8:8 (between 1010 and 930 BC)

Matthew Maury (1806–1873), known as the father of oceanography, saw the phrase “paths of the sea” in Psalm 8. Maury trusted God's words and searched for these paths in the ocean. He later wrote a book on the subject.

9. Life Is in the Blood

For the life of a creature is in the blood, and I have given it to you to make atonement for yourselves on the altar; it is the blood that makes atonement for one’s life
Leviticus 17:11 (1500 BC)

The Bible says that blood is the source of life. Two hundred years ago, people used to drain blood from sick people, which often led to death. Now we know that blood is crucial for life. It brings water and nutrients to every cell, removes waste, and helps control body temperature. Blood also carries oxygen from the lungs to the rest of the body. If you lose too much blood, you will die.

11. Laws of Hygiene

And when he who has a discharge is cleansed of his discharge, then he shall count for himself seven days for his cleansing, wash his clothes, and bathe his body in running water; then he shall be clean.
Leviticus 15:13 (1500 BC)

The Bible advises washing hands under running water when dealing with diseases. Before the 1800s, doctors washed their hands in still water, leaving behind invisible germs and causing many deaths. In 1845, Dr. Ignaz Semmelweis instructed doctors to wash their hands before examining patients, and the death rate among those patients dropped significantly.

13. The Rebirth of Israel

For I will take you out of the nations; I will gather you from all the countries and bring you back into your own land. Ezekiel 36:24

On May 14, 1948, the nation of Israel was born again after the Jewish people had been without a homeland for over 2000 years.

2. The Earth is Round

He sits enthroned above the circle of the earth
Isaiah 40:22 (800 BC)

People used to think the earth was flat, but a few hundred years after Isaiah, Pythagoras (around 500 BC), Aristotle (around 350 BC), and others discovered that the earth is round.

4. The First Law of Thermodynamics

Thus the heavens and the earth were completed in all their vast array.
Genesis 2:1

Genesis says that the heavens and earth were made in the past and will not be made again. The law says that matter and energy cannot be created or destroyed; they can only change from one form to another.

6. The Water Cycle

he calls for the waters of the sea and pours them out over the face of the land
Amos 9:6 (750 BC)

All streams flow into the sea, yet the sea is never full.
To the place the streams come from, there they return again.

Ecclesiastes 1:7 (930 BC)

The water cycle was first discovered by Bernard Palissy in 1580 AD.

8. The Origin of Sexes

He who made them at the beginning ‘made them male and female.’

Matthew 19:4

Nearly all complex life forms have both male and female. The male and female need each other to reproduce. One cannot continue life without the other. How could each species develop a way to reproduce before they even started reproducing?

10. Blood Clotting

He who is eight days old among you shall be circumcised, every male child in your generations

Genesis 17:12

Why was circumcision done on the eighth day? Medical science has found that a newborn's blood clots best on that day. That's when the blood has the right amount of factors to stop bleeding. Vitamin K doesn't reach a good level until after day seven, and day eight is when prothrombin is at its highest level, even more than the usual amount.

12. Laws of Quarantine

All the days he has the sore he shall be unclean. He is unclean, and he shall dwell alone; his dwelling shall be outside the camp.

Leviticus 13:46 (1500 BC)

People didn't start using quarantine laws until the 17th century. If they had followed the medical rules in Leviticus earlier, it could have saved millions of lives during the plagues.

14. Jesus Cursed Towns

Then Jesus began to denounce the towns in which most of his miracles had been performed, because they did not repent. “Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! … And you, Capernaum, will you be lifted to the heavens? No, you will go down to Hades.
Matthew 11:20-23

The Roman city of Tiberias still exists as a modern, inhabited city, while the cursed towns are now mostly ruins.
